Interested in actively shaping the future?

Do terms like digitalization, Industry 4.0, artificial intelligence and future mobility sound familiar to you? Are you a fan of subjects like mathematics and physics? Then we warmly welcome you to the Engineering Faculty!

The htw saar is Saarland’s “engineer forge”.

We offer the following fields of study within 7 departments:

  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Renewable Energy
  • Energy Systems Engineering
  • Automotive Engineering
  • Computer Science and Informatics
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Process Engineering
  • Mechatronics
  • Sensor Technology

In the three "classic" disciplines, electrical engineering, computer science and mechanical engineering, you can even complete a fully-integrated Franco-German degree program within the framework of the Franco-German University Institute (DFHI/ISFATES) and receive your “Licence”.

We also offer programs created in response to current scientific and employment market trends such as biomedical engineering, renewable energies/energy systems engineering, automotive engineering and mechatronics/sensor technology.

Our faculty has the highest volume of research activity at the htw saar. In 2016, two-thirds of third-party research funding was acquired by our department. Our research work is highly diversified and performed by 20 research groups and institutes. It ranges from applied materials engineering to the neurosciences.

Our strength lies in technologies with a significant potential for future economic development, such as:

  • thin-film technology
  • electromagnetic compatibility
  • robotics
  • environmental informatics
  • vehicle telematics

Engineers and social scientists carry out joint research work at the Institute for Health Research and Technology (igft) and a number of spin-off institutes, such as the Institute for Automotive and Environmental Engineering (FORGIS) and the Institute for Future Energy Systems (IZES) have established strong positions on the R&D market.

Three endowed professors from the Fraunhofer Society, a German research organization that promotes applied research, conduct research as department or research group heads at the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering (IBMT) in St. Ingbert and the Fraunhofer Institute for Nondestructive Testing (IZFP) in Saarbrücken.

One of our professors is the scientific chair at the Center for Mechatronics and Automation Technology (ZeMA) a collaborative undertaking involving the htw saar, the Saarland University and the Saarland regional government. Broad-based distance-learning concepts are being developed to cover tuition and training in mathematics, statistics and foreign language skills.

The Automotive AKJ working group (Arbeitskreis Just-in-Time) cooperates with experts and managers from the automotive industry to optimize just-in-time processes and structures in the automotive and supply sectors. It even organizes an annual international automotive congress in Saarbrücken, which now has international offshoots.
