The surrounding area of Saarbrücken is full of smaller cities that are just as charming and historical as the capital city itself. Saarlouis was founded in the 17th century by the French King Louis XIV and built after the plans of Vauban. The fortified city owns the status of "the secret capital city of Saarland" and is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Saarland due to its historic past.
The northern part of the federal state is known for its remarkable landscape. Around one third of Saarland is covered by forest. In the town of Mettlach, you can enjoy the view of the famous "Saarschleife" - the River Saar Loop. Mettlach is also home to the world-famous manufacturer of ceramics, Villeroy & Boch.
Saarland has a privileged location - in the heart of Europe! Therefore, it's easy to catch a train or to hop in the car for a day trip to France or Luxembourg.
